India at the Olympics: Note from Rajeev Mehta

As we cheer our athletes in Tokyo, take a look at what the Secretary General, Indian Olympics Association has to say.

"The Olympic Games is the most prestigious sporting event on earth. Revived in 1896 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the Olympic Games over the years has become a celebration, uniting all nations in friendship and peace through sport.

Even though India’s first appearance at the Olympic Games is recorded through a British representative, Norman Pritchard, in the pre- independence era in 1900, the foundation of the Olympic movement in the country was set when the first Indian contingent walked into the Olympic arena at the 1920 Games in Antwerp. It’s been a hundred years since, and we continue to send our athletes on the field with pride.

The course of Team India’s journey at the Olympic Games features some of the greatest moments in Indian sporting history – the trailblazing prowess of the Hockey team and ‘The Wizard’ Dhyan Chand, India’s first individual Olympic medal in 1952 and the second that came after a wait of 44 years, the first female Olympic medallist in 2000, the historic Gold by Olympic Champion Abhinav Bindra, the record medal haul at the London 2012 Games, the near misses, our sporting legends and many memorable moments line India’s history at the Olympic Games.

As we prepare for the Games of XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo, India at the Olympics commemorates Team India’s journey in the Olympic Games and encourages the little champs to take up sports. It gives me hope and pride to introduce this comprehensive graphic collection celebrating a century of Team India at the Olympic Games."
